Rio de Janeiro (Brazil) is a city like no other. Where else can you find world-class beaches, gorgeous mountain hikes, a unique cityscape, and famous landmarks (such as Sugarloaf Mountain, Christ the Redeemer, etc) all in one place? Only right here. Add the incredible energy that we Latinos and cariocas (people born in Rio) bring to our everyday lives, and that’s it. You’ve got a city that’s energetic, friendly, and absolutely breathtaking. If you’ve been searching for your dream destination wedding location, well, you’re in luck. Allow me to convince you and guide you on how to elope in Rio de Janeiro.
We are Stephan & Adriana. Husband and wife photo & video team, and we’ve been capturing elopements and intimate weddings since 2019. I (Adriana) am originally from Rio de Janeiro, and Stephan is from California. Each year, our family splits time between our two homes, so know that the information you’ll see below isn’t coming from a little internet research or AI. These tips come from a Rio de Janeiro local, born and raised, a lover of this beautiful city of mine. And I can’t wait to share them with you!

I believe this is the question that comes to mind for almost anyone who starts to plan a trip to a South American destination. So let me answer this: yes, Rio de Janeiro is safe. But it’s a big city, with an estimated 7 million people living here. So, like any other big city in the world, you need to be smart.
A little background here: my husband and I have traveled all over the world. I’ve been to 50 countries, and he has been to 77 countries. We spent our honeymoon in Mexico, Belize, and Guatemala. We’ve been all over Central and South America. A lot of these places don’t feel very different than Paris, New York, or any big city in the US and Europe (when it comes to safety). The amount of awareness you need to have is about the same. I was born and raised in Rio de Janeiro, so I’m used to having this type of awareness. I can see if you’re coming from Iceland, for example, it could be more of an effort to think about things you don’t normally have to when you’re home. But that’s one of the experiences that come with traveling and getting out of your comfort zone!
In 2025, Rio de Janeiro received a record number of visitors: 12,5 million tourists came to the city. This is a pretty big number. A city so popular and visited is centered on tourism, and you can be sure tourists are well-treated here. So, all in all, Rio de Janeiro is a safe city, and you should absolutely visit and elope here. But let me give you a couple of things to keep in mind:

The weather in Rio de Janeiro is mostly beautiful year-round. But like any tropical destination, there will be periods of rain and strong storms. Here’s a little rundown on what the weather looks like throughout the year:
As far as time of day goes, we always recommend doing your vow and ring exchange around sunrise. This is the most meaningful part of your day. So ideally, you’ll have privacy and feel like you’re the only two people in the world. Since we’re talking about public places, we can’t quite promise that. But I can tell you for a fact that everything is much more peaceful early in the morning.
Let’s talk about locations! One of the most fun parts of eloping is not being limited to a wedding venue or a church when it comes to your wedding day experience. You can literally do whatever you want! Yes, anything goes. You can start your morning with a surf or paddleboard session, followed by some beachside breakfast and coconut water (straight out of a coconut). Then you can get ready to say your vows to each other at a gorgeous beach spot. For the afternoon/evening, you can head over to watch an incredible sunset at Sugar Loaf Mountain and end your day having dinner and cocktails in the city. This is a very rough timeline example that doesn’t even begin to cover the surface of what your elopement could be – but it gives you an idea!
Here are a couple of our favorite locations to elope in Rio de Janeiro:

These are just a couple of examples in the city of Rio! But on the outskirts of the city, you’ll find even more beautiful options: breathtaking mountains in Petropolis/Secretario, unique beach towns like Buzios or Arraial do Cabo, and colonial towns with beautiful islands like Paraty. The options are endless, and that’s why you need a local photographer to help you and guide you in finding the perfect elopement location for you!
Now, let’s talk about the legal part of getting married in Rio de Janeiro. Unlike certain destinations around the world, it’s not that simple to acquire your marriage license and then legally get married here. In California, for example, anyone over the age of 18 can get ordained online and sign their marriage papers – easy peasy. But because that’s not the case in Rio, our suggestion would be for you to legally get married at home, wherever you’re coming from, and save your personal vow and ring exchange for the gorgeous backdrops of Rio de Janeiro. This is a common thing a lot of our couples do; that way, it’s one less thing they have to worry about while planning for their destination wedding.
If you have been looking for your unique elopement destination, I hope this article helped you see the beautiful city of Rio as a very viable (and awesome) option. And I mean, why not combine a trip of a lifetime with an event of a lifetime? As elopement photographers, we’re here to guide you from the first email exchange to help you plan your trip, as well as your wedding day! Our job isn’t just to pick up a camera and take pictures; it’s a lot more, and we absolutely love to do it.
