Sequoia National Park is a spot so ethereal, it feels as though you have stepped into the pages of a fairytale. To tie the knot here is to add your story to a legacy that was started thousands of years ago! If you have been considering this location for your wedding, we would love to tell you everything you can expect! As Sequoia elopement photographers, we get the chance to work with couples from all across the globe as they plan their weddings at this site. Here’s your guide to a Sequoia National Park elopement.

First, you will need to decide when you want to elope. Sequoia has pretty diverse seasons, so you can decide what you want your perfect wedding day to look like. Here’s what you can expect throughout the year:

Our favorite seasons are spring and fall – also known as “shoulder season”. It’s the time right before or right after the summer crowds have come and gone. Yes, the chance of rain or weather is bigger than in the summer, but skipping the summer crowds and having a truly intimate experience is always worth it!
All weddings that happen inside the National Park System will need a Special Use Permit. These are first-come, first-served. Because they will last for one year, we always suggest applying ASAP! But you don’t have to stress about it – the process is quite simple. We’ve also filled out hundreds of Wedding Permit Applications for our couples, and we’re happy to help!
You will also need to apply for a marriage license in California. You can apply in person at any County Clerk’s office in the state, and you do not need to be a resident to apply. There is no waiting period, and your license will last up to 90 days. You will need 1-2 witnesses at your ceremony as well as an officiant.
We are both ordained, so you can also just do a very intimate vow exchange ceremony and have either of us sign your marriage certificate. Another alternative to hiring an officiant is having a friend or a family member get ordained online and officiate your ceremony – that’s something our couples do quite often!

Elopements give you total freedom when it comes to deciding what you do and do not want in your budget! No matter what, you will need to budget $300-$400 for permits and licenses. Here is what else to consider:
Remember that you don’t need to hire every single possible vendor for your elopement, so everyone’s budget will vary widely. It’s up to you and your partner to decide what your priorities are! As your Elopement Photographers, we provide an extensive Elopement Guide to all of our couples that has a long list of recommended local vendors – so that’s one less thing for you to worry about!

Now comes the fun part: picking your location! Here are a few of our faves:
